3 perks of travelling in green season to Costa Rica

Discovered the charm of this vivid season!

Hi! My name is Serendipity and in this blog I will give you some secrets of why traveling to Costa Rica in the green season may be one of your best decisions.

Costa Rica is a small country in territory however, because its climate is very diverse, so is it´s flora and fauna.

In this small country the climate varies greatly from one area to another, for example if you drive 20 minutes from San José you will find a completely different climate with dense forest and many clouds in the Braulio Carrillo National Park. There are also areas such as the Caribbean coast, which is relatively unique and has its own microclimate.

In this country, there´s not really a winter or summer season, rather, climate is classified into two different seasons. The rainy season is also called “green season”, since nature is at its best during this period, besides the frequent rainfall, our rain is warm! So getting wet can be fun.

Rain in Costa Rica

Seasons distribution in Costa Rica

The seasons extend throughout the year like this:

Dry season (high season): From December 11 to April + July to August.

Rainy season (green season): May and June + From September 1 to December 10.

*Consider that Costa Rica is a tropical country, that’s why seasons will not be exact. It is very likely that you will find rain during the dry season and dry moments during the rainy season. The mentioned periods are not exact.

Most people travel to Costa Rica during the dry season. During this time, the weather is sunny and the tourist life is quite active. There are some areas such as Guanacaste where it hardly rains during this season, in consequence, the vegetation is not as green as the one you will usually find in the rest of Costa Rica. Besides the charms of the dry season, there are some people who consider that there are even more advantages when traveling in the green season and we agree!

Discover some reasons why:

Nature is more vivid and lush.

It is a special time to visit the tropical forests. In the rainy season the plants are absorbing a lot of water, and because of this, the forests grow intensely during this time.

In addition to the lush flora, fauna will also surprise you. For example, whales like to visit Costa Rica during the rainy season! The whale watching season runs from mid-July to mid-November. In places such as Uvita and Dominical the best time for these espectacular shows is during September and October.

For surfers and rafting enthusiasts it is a good time since the waves are bigger and rivers are fuller (even those that sometimes keep a low water volume in the dry season)

As we mentioned before, the Caribbean has its own microclimate, and on this period it is usually sunny, so you can enjoy a wonderful caribbean time too. The latest months in the year, are also the time of coffee harvest, and it extremely pleasant naps under the soothing sound of rain.
